Roof Decision Guide
Repair, Rejuvenate, or Replace My Roof?
Not every leak means you need a new roof. Fortified Home Solutions inspects the leak source, shingle condition, flashing, ventilation, decking, storm damage, and roof age before making any recommendation.
Option 1Repair May Be Enough
Damage is isolated to a small area
Shingles are mostly in good condition
Leak source is identified and clear
A flashing, pipe boot, or seal failed
Storm damage is minor and contained
We'll never recommend a full replacement when a targeted repair will protect your home just as well — and save you money.
Option 2Rejuvenation May Extend Its Life
Meet ShingleGuard by Fortified, our roof-washing division.
Shingles are aging but structurally sound — typically 7–15 years old
Granule loss is noticeable but not severe — shingles are brittle or drying out
No active leaks or decking damage — roof is still watertight
You want to extend the roof's life 5–10 more years at a fraction of replacement cost
You're preparing to sell and want to pass a roof inspection without full replacement
Budget doesn't support replacement right now — rejuvenation buys you time
Roof rejuvenation restores the natural oils and flexibility to aging asphalt shingles — resealing granules, slowing UV breakdown, and adding years of life. Not a coating or patch. We inspect first to confirm the roof qualifies.
Option 3Replacement May Be Smarter
Roof is near or past its expected lifespan
Leaks keep coming back after repairs
Shingles are curling, cracking, or losing granules
Damage is widespread across the roof surface
Insurance scope involves major storm damage
When replacement is the right call, we handle the entire process — including working with your insurance company to get the full scope approved.
Not sure which applies to you? A free inspection answers the question — no pressure, no sales pitch.
Whether you've had storm damage or simply want to upgrade your home, Fortified Home Solutions has you covered. From full renovations and remodels to insurance restoration, roofing, and damage repair — we do it all under one roof across all of Alabama. Owner Chris Brasfield has been building and running crews since 1987 — that's nearly 40 years of Alabama construction experience behind every job we take on.
You'll need your homeowner's insurance policy number, the date of the loss (storm date), and a basic description of the damage. That's it to get started. From there, we handle the documentation — photos, measurements, and a full written scope of damage — so your claim is as strong as possible before the adjuster ever shows up.
Call us anyway. Denials and low-ball settlements can often be challenged with proper documentation and a re-inspection. We've helped homeowners reopen claims and recover significantly more than their initial offer. There's no cost to find out where you stand.
Storm damage claims (wind and hail) are considered "Act of God" events in most states including Alabama. They typically do not raise your rates the same way an at-fault auto accident would. Your rate impact — if any — depends on your specific carrier and policy. We recommend calling your agent directly to ask before filing if you're concerned.
Your deductible is the portion of the repair cost you pay out of pocket before insurance covers the rest. Yes, it is required — any contractor who offers to "waive" your deductible is breaking Alabama law and committing insurance fraud. We never waive deductibles. We do work with homeowners on payment timing so it's manageable.
ACV stands for Actual Cash Value — what your damaged materials are worth today after depreciation. RCV stands for Replacement Cost Value — what it actually costs to replace them with new materials. Most policies pay ACV first, then release the remaining depreciation (called "recoverable depreciation") once the work is completed and documented. We help you collect every dollar you're owed.
A supplement is an additional payment request submitted to the insurance company when the original estimate misses items or undervalues the scope of work. Insurance estimates are often incomplete — missing code-required items, underestimating labor, or using outdated material prices. We review every estimate line by line and submit supplements to make sure the approved amount actually covers the job.
Most Alabama homeowner policies require you to report a claim "promptly" or within a specific timeframe — commonly 1 year from the date of loss, though some policies are shorter. Don't wait. The longer you wait, the harder it is to prove the damage was storm-related. Call us right away and we'll help you document everything before the deadline.
Law & Ordinance (also called Ordinance or Law coverage) pays the additional cost to bring your home up to current building codes during a covered repair. Older homes often have outdated wiring, framing, or roofing systems that must be upgraded by law when a contractor touches them. Without this coverage, you pay that upgrade out of pocket. Check your policy declarations page — many homeowners have it and don't know it.
When we repair or replace a damaged roof or structure, Alabama building codes require certain upgrades — things like updated decking thickness, drip edge installation, ice-and-water shield, or ventilation requirements. Insurance estimates often leave these items out entirely. We identify every code-required item and submit them as part of your claim or supplement so you don't end up paying out of pocket to meet the law.
No. We walk you through the entire process step by step. We document the damage, help you complete the paperwork correctly, and communicate directly with your adjuster on your behalf. Most homeowners have never filed a major claim before — that's exactly why we're here.
Emergency tarping and board-up can happen the same day. Full insurance approval typically takes 2–6 weeks depending on the carrier and scope. Once approved, most roofing projects are completed in 1–3 days. Larger structural or remodeling jobs are scheduled individually based on scope.
Both. Storm damage and insurance restoration is a big part of what we do, but we also take on full remodels, kitchen and bath renovations, decks, additions, painting, gutters, and more — all without any insurance claim involved. If it's on your home, we can handle it.
